In this picture i was thinking about the time in which my opening sequence would be set, yes it is a very modern in the picture, however with the correct camera shots (e.g. close up) it could be made to look quite old, however i dont think i will go down this route as it would be much easier to make a thriller that was more modern.



I feel this is less about the location where i would film and more about the type of shots i would film, for instance, we may be filming shots about someone following a target. This type of shot displays that the person whos POV it is is hiding, this is a loose connection but could be useful later on.

This very icy shot could connote a very cold and calculating killer, or maybe a dark and cold theme/ genre. This type of shot would also give the viewer power (as it is clearly a high angle shot) so maybe it should not be used as we want the audience to be powerless ( convention of a thriller.)

Memento- Analysis of opening sequence

Title of the film
- The title for this film is "Memento" this is a physical reminder of a moment in a persons life, this could be in the form of a souveneir, a special rock/pebble, or in this case a photograph, This appears on the screen right at the beginning of the sequence indicating the importance of the title and the photo's to the main character.

Setting
-The setting is shown only breifly to the viewer, it is shown to be a dingy dark place This is revealed to the viewer slowly it a reverse sequence of someone being shot, the first glimpses are close ups limiting th viewer's perspective of the room. This could be used to reflect the main characters limited view of the world, due to his memory loss.

Key Props:
-The bullet is a key prop this shows the danger of this scene (the man getting shot.) A high shot is used to show the bullet, however when we see the gun being fired (in reverse) a low shot is used, this could be going along with the saying "gun's don't kill people, people kill people", this shows that the film is a psychological thriller, as it deals with basic human psychie right off the bat.

Titles:
-Titles are shown in this opening sequence in blue font This colour is very depressing, as such it adds to the depressing nature of the scene. The font used is that you might find on a gravestone, this emphasises the theme of death in this opening sequence.

Opening scene in relation to the film:
- This opening scene relates to the rest of the film as it sets up the film to be a psychological thriller (as explained earlier.) It also introduces the main character and about his meantal disability, shown through his dependance on photo's. It also shows the link between the title and the plotline of the film. In summary it does everythng an opening sequence should do.

Cinematography:

The scene starts with a perspective shot, from the view of another character, this makes the audience feel as if they are actually witnessing the scene at hand. Camera pans around the room frequently, this gives the viewer a full perspecive of the room, this introduces the setting very well, introducing the setting is a vital part of an opening sequence. This panning of the room could also represent how the character is looking around the room in his drunken state trying to remember the night before (shown in his flashbacks), if we take it in this literal sense then it could be seen as a POV shot (point of view.) The flashback idea I think I will use as it does create a lot of mystery and suspense in the thriller genre, this would also fit in with a mysterious thriller (a popular genre from our questionarre.

Sound:

There is no diagetic sound in the sequence, there is only the sound track, this separates the audience from the actual scene as their is no real sound present, this has the added effect on reinforcing the fact that the character in this scene got drunk the previous night, as in his memories he feels separated from them, in the same way that the audience feels separated from him. The sound could also connote a lack of life in the opening sequence, this could make the theme of death (a key theme in any thriller) a lot more vivid in the opening sequence. The lack of sound could also remind the audience of a lack of senses when hungover, this makes the audience very involved in the actual opening sequence, in that they can all relate to it.

Editing:

The editing used in this scene is used to make the character seem very separated from the memories we see of him, presumably from the previous night, this is done by making the colours very strange and abnormal. It is also done by making the memories very unfocussed, hinting at the fact that the character was under the influence of alcohol. If I use a flashback I will also use similar editing techniques, however i would also use a colour drain (black and white?) this will help distinguish the present from the past, this clear distinction between the past and present will make the flashback a lot more clear to the audience.

Mise-en-scene:

The props are a very major part in this opening sequence, they are used to present the titles of the film, in doing so it requires that the viewer looks closely at the scene in order to see the titles, this is a very subtle focus pull as it makes the audience sit up and pay attention to the scene, this makes the scene successful because it hook's the audience, and makes them pay attention. The light colour scheme contrasts directly to the theme of the film, this will create a lot of tension and also a sense of confusion in the scene, this foreshadows a great danger/tragedy later on in the film.

Understanding the difference between a trailer and an opening sequence

Movie Trailer:
- plot overview, does not include the climax of the film.
- grabs the audiences attention.
- best parts of the film are shown.
- most famous actors/actresses are shown.
- voice over tells the audience the plot beginning.
- no spoilers for the end of the film.
- Montage editing is used to create excitement.
- editing is very fast paced.
- lots of shots are used.
- persuade audience to go and watch the film.

Cinematography:

The scene opens with an establishing shot of the scene, which includes 3 men in a richly decorated room, this is a typical feature in opening sequences as it helps to introduce the film. The shot has the added effect of introducing some of the characters as well, overall it introduces characters, setting and plot line very well. The scene ends with the camera zooming in on hannibals mask, this is an iconic prop for the character, this uses what we call a focus pull to draw the audiences attention to the mask, this has the effect of being very foreboding. It also may introduce the character of Hannibal a bit as he is so well known for wearing this mask.

Editing:

The editing used here is mostly in the titles, the fact that they are red, symbolising blood and death, tells the audience that this film is a thriller about a murderer. The titles at the start are in very official, and uninteresting font, this changes when the scene ends to a font tat looks very handwritten, this introduces the film to be mre personal to the audience, as it looks like an actual person has written the word "Hannibal" on the screen. The way that the last shot fades into the final title makes the end of the scene clear, it hints at the audience that the actual plot is about to start, the credits are over, and that they should know pay attention.

Mise-en-scene:

The mise-en-scene used here is used to heavily hint upon the theme of the film, for example, the fact that the man in the wheelchair is so horribly disfigured hints that he may have been one of hannibals victims, this tells the audience that the genre here is a thriller about a murderer. The props used also help to introduce the audience to the film, the mask shown at the end of the scene is such an iconic symbol of hannibal that the audience immediatly know what to expect, this may set them up for any plot twists during the film. The intimidating nature of the mask also helps to inspire some nervousness in the audience, so that when the tension breaks it shocks them all the more, as they have been feeling it right frm the beginning of the film.

Sound:

The sound in the opening scene is all diagetic (present in the scene) this has the effect of making the sequence more personal to the audience, it also introduces them to the film in a way in which they are familiar with, a normal conversation.

The brief is to create the titles and opening sequence of a new thriller film, this is allowed to be a maximum of 2 minutes.

Peer Feedback: preliminary Task

What went well:

-good match on action for the door handle

-good eye-line match

-180 degree rule used

-cliffhanger was interesting

-acting was great

Even better if:

-if there was more continuity when Nathan opened the door,

(he switches hands when the shot changes)

-no master shot was used to introduce setting or the actors

-match on action could be improved at points

Using this feedback:

-In the future in that i will, pay more attention to continuity, to make sure errors

,like the one that occurred in this project, do not happen in the future.

-Use a master shot in order to introduce the characters and the setting more effectively

First Video on youtube

Having a video on youtube makes my video feel a lot more proffensional as it will be seen by people who are not i my class, this also enables people to comment on my work, this provides an in-biased critisism for me, this will truly help me improve in the future.

Also I think that it being on youtube will bring my work to the masses, which is what i think filming is all about.

Evaluation

Cinematography- I think that we used different shot types very effectively, the use of the low shot combined with various long shots made a lot of variety in the film. Also we took into account that continuity would have to be used when putting the shots in order, we made sure that the shots looked like they fitted together very smoothly, to make sure that the film flowed properly.

Sound- most of the sound we used was diegetic, this means that the sound was present in the actual film, this is usually dialogue. Most of the sound we had was dialogue (apart from various opening and closing doors) this meant that the sound was very personal as it was a conversation that rivetted the viewer as it was the only sound present. Also the fact that the conversation was left on a cliffhanger made the viewer even more involved in it.

Mise-en-scene- the piece on a wholewas a very natural one (as in this is an everyday occurance) this meant that the viewer could relate to the film a lot more as they know that this could happen to them, increasing the interest. In this respect the film is very effective as it makes the audience more absorbed in the film.

Continuity editing- we used the 180 degree rule in order to keep the conversations filmed realistic, this meant that you have to stay on one side of the conversation, meaning that the people are on the right side of the frame. Changing this confuses the viewer as it appears they have swapped sides in the frame.

-the "push a little button" activity was an area i could of worked on in that i did not import properly and the voice overs at the end were not done very well.

-also if photoshop had been used in the induction i feel it could have been more interesting as it would have made the programmes used more varied. Also it would have helped those who have never used photoshop to understand it, and therefor better prepare them for the course.

-my favourate activity was the remaking of the "push a little button advert"

-this is because it allowed me to experement with diffrent camera angles and shot types, this allowed me to be very creative in my work, which made it good for me.

-i also enjoyed doing the jobsite advert, due to the fact that it also had a varied use of the camera in it.
